From Regulations to Relationships
It’s hard to imagine care plans so meaningful that a family includes them during their loved one’s memorial service. Consider these two stories shared during a recent Care Plan Workshop:

Yellow Tape
While checking in, it was hard to miss yellow tape going in all directions on the floor. My first thought was “way finding cues for people with dementia. What a good idea.” Boy was I wrong. And why am I stuck on a phrase like way finding cues? And why do I think I don’t need way finding cues?

Lessons I learned from nature
This past Friday, we met for the first time in over 2 years in person. Part of our meeting was a guided therapeutic lessons learned from nature walk. The board member leading us talked about a tree that had limbs resembling elders with sore, stiff, arthritic joints. I took a picture of the tree and will share a brief lesson an elder taught me twenty-five plus years ago.

I wish I knew this when…
I heard the same phrase from three different care partner families this week: “I wish I knew this when” is followed by a story of past events in their elders’ life. These stories are sad, painful examples of what happens to care partners when the world of their elder living with dementia is not understood.
